The Basics of COVID-19: Symptoms and How it Works in the Body

COVID-19 is a new type of coronavirus first identified in late 2019. Coronaviruses are types of viruses that have crown-like structures. The most common coronaviruses that infect humans include  the following: 

  1. 229E (alpha coronavirus)

  2. NL63 (alpha coronavirus)

  3. OC43 (beta coronavirus)

  4. HKU1 (beta coronavirus)

Some of the more known types of coronaviruses are those that evolved from animals and transmitted to humans into new kinds:

  1. SARS

  2. MERS

  3. COVID-19 

Prevention Methods

  • Practice social distancing (stay 6 feet away from others)

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap for at least 20 seconds

  • Carry and use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

  • Disinfect commonly touched areas such as tabletops, counters, door handles, and cell phone screens

  • Try to avoid being around those who are sick

  • If you are sick, wear a mask to prevent spreading illness to others
